Livelihood activity
Tailoring, dairy, petty trade, food processing and other home-based enterprise.
Credit built on the oldest security there is — people who know each other.
Group lending is where micro finance began, and it still works for the same reason: a group of members who save together, meet regularly and stand behind one another is a better credit than any single document. This is our most accessible product and, for many members, the first formal loan of their lives.
We lend to self-help groups and joint-liability groups whose members have been meeting and saving regularly. The group takes collective responsibility for repayment, individual amounts stay small, and instalments are collected at the group meeting rather than at a branch counter.
The purpose of this product is not only credit. Regular saving, a written account every member can inspect and an instalment met on time build the thrift habit and the repayment record that later open the door to a larger individual loan. Several of our members graduate that way, and that is exactly the intention.
The group guarantee stands in place of security, so members without assets can still borrow.
Instalments are collected at the group meeting, saving a trip and a day's wage.
Weekly or fortnightly amounts sized to a daily-earning household.
A clean group record builds the history that supports an individual loan later.

The group covers the shortfall in that instalment — that is what joint liability means. In practice, groups usually settle it internally, which is precisely why the model works.
